* * *

I slip into the house after Johan and follow him as he walks through the hall toward the kitchen.

After a couple of steps, he stops. “Why am I being tailed like a criminal?”

My face glows with warmth. “I wanted to ask you about something.”

“Ancestors give me strength,” he groans. “No more about Justin or Elaine.”

“No! Not about that.”

He puts his hands on his hips. “What, then?”

“It’s about my task.… Has there ever been someone who did a different task than what they were given and passed?”

“Not that I know.”

My shoulders sink.

“But that doesn’t mean it’s not possible.” He folds his arms over his chest. “Who Called?”

“Mama Jova.”

He whistles low. “Mama Jova is wicked. There will be hell to pay if you fail her task.” He leans forward. “It can’t be a simple assignment.”

“It isn’t.” I wring my hands. “So? An alternative?”

Johan leans against the wall. “Maybe she wants you to feel what she did. The woman was whipped within an inch of her life, had her lover killed in front of her, and then was left alone, too weak to escape with the slaves she freed. You’ve been raised in the coddling arms of a huge family. What was the task?”

I shift on the spot.

“You want me to help you, and I don’t know the full story?”

“She said to destroy my first love.”

He raises his brows. “And you’ve interpreted that how?”

“Interpreted it? She said ‘destroy.’ I have… I mean, he’s, we’re a romantic genetic match. I have to fall in love with him properly and… well, you know, right? But if I can avoid that…”

“Maybe you can. But do you want to gamble on maybe?”

I stare down at my feet. The suns painted on my toes are starting to feel out of place more often than not. I should have Keisha repaint them.

“I heard Keis got a personal referral from NuGene. That’s what she’s always wanted, isn’t it? Some freedom. Her own job, and I hear they do on-site apartments.” Johan’s voice is casual, but there’s a weight to it. Like he’s trying to say more than he is.

I don’t want to talk about Keis leaving the house. “This isn’t about her. I need help with my task.”

“I am helping you,” Johan says with a shrug. “If you can’t see that, that’s your problem.”

I don’t understand how thinking about Keis’s future is supposed to help me destroy Luc.

Lately, hers has been falling beautifully into place.

Soon it’ll be her graduation, where I know she’ll get a ridiculous amount of honors.

After that, an internship position at NuGene, where she’ll flourish under mentorship.

Then further on, Keis attending an amazing university on NuGene’s dime, dazzling her professors, and graduating to join the company as a valued full-time employee. She’ll move into their on-site apartments, and I’ll help her do it, even if it hurts.

I see her changing the world, and I plan to be there for everything.

Keis’s future is the closest I’ve ever come to imagining mine.

And it tells me nothing about how to avoid destroying Luc’s.
